Description

“Two instances come to mind where a man sacrifices all else for his method only to one day incinerate it without warning—traumatic brain injury and the prophesied arrival of his fantasy woman.”

The Longhouse is an anthology of 15 of the best short stories and poems originally submitted and rejected for the first volume of the Passage Prize, edited by Participation Frog. Spanning numerous genres and styles, The Longhouse showcases some of the finest writers of our generation, including stained hanes, J. Neira, Noble Red, and many more.

“I’ve always been a writer, but the U.K. publishing world has become so woke that there was no place for me. When I heard about the Passage Prize, it was energising because it connected me to fellow creatives and also a potential readership. I entered in three categories and won third prize in the Poetry category. It was so rewarding to know that these guys felt I’d done good work. While waiting for the winners to be announced, I completed my debut novella Swimming at Sunset, and in June 2022, I self-published it via Amazon Kindle. I specifically wrote it for—and as a tribute to—the Passage Prize crowd. I had also entered the prize’s Fiction category with the work I’m now happy to present here. It’s an extract from an unfinished novel titled City of Culture where a man returns to his home city and gets mixed up in a dangerous conspiracy linked to his former colleagues in the music business. I have very nearly completed my second novella No Guns in London, which is a spy thriller set in the 1960’s, and I hope to also complete City of Culture in the near future.” — Noble Red, third-place poetry winner of the Passage Prize

“‘The stone which the builders refused is become the head stone of the corner.’ I don’t know if I would quite go that far, but I am still pleased to be able to recommend this collection of Passage Prize entrants who, for whatever reason, didn’t quite make my list. As I wrote elsewhere, I wish that I could have selected all of them to be winners, and I felt a pain in rejecting each one, so I hope you will be able to enjoy each of these works, with their flaws but also their triumphs. From these stories, I learned a great deal about the thoughts and feelings of the many aspiring writers in our sphere, and I am grateful now that you will have that opportunity also.” — Zero HP Lovecraft, author of God-Shaped Hole and Don’t Make Me Think
